When should I go?

Curacao sits outside the main Atlantic hurricane belt, at about 12 degrees north, so direct hurricane strikes are extremely rare. The driest months run February through June, with March typically the driest. Late October through December is the wettest stretch. Daytime highs stay in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius (mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit) year-round, and the trade winds keep it comfortable even in the warmer months.

Do I actually need a car?

More often than not, yes. Curacao is roughly two and a half times the size of Aruba, and its best beaches, dive sites, and national parks are spread along a long coastline rather than clustered around one hotel strip. If you are staying in Jan Thiel and mostly want beach time near your hotel, taxis and booked tours can cover you. Rent a car for the days you want Westpunt, Christoffel National Park, or the shore-entry dive sites, that ground is not realistic to cover on foot or by taxi alone.

Entry & practical stuff

  • DI Card: the Digital Immigration Card is mandatory for all foreign travelers, completed at the official portal only (dicardcuracao.com), within 7 days of departure. It is free; any site charging a fee for it is not the official one.
  • Cash: carry some Caribbean guilder (XCG) or USD for taxis and small vendors. USD is widely accepted alongside XCG.
  • Safety: Curacao is a U.S. State Dept Level 1 (lowest), among the safest islands in the Caribbean.

A quick note on insurance: a good policy covers the cancellations, medical costs, and lost bags you hope you never need.

  • Best time: Arrive before 10am. It's free and famous, which means the parking area and the sand both fill up by midday, especially when tour coaches arrive.
  • Parking: Free, but chaotic at peak hours since it's the most-visited west-end beach. Early arrival matters more here than the entrance fee (there isn't one).
  • Swim note: Generally calm and good for swimming, though the steps down the cliff are worth knowing about if anyone in your group has mobility concerns.

  • Best time: Daytime for the beach-club scene; weekends are the busiest and loudest.
  • Parking: Included in the small per-person entry fee at the beach clubs.
  • Swim note: Calm and swimmable, though this is a social, watersports-heavy beach rather than a quiet nature spot.

  • Best time: Open 8am-6pm daily. Morning is calmer and less crowded; tour coaches and cruise excursion groups tend to arrive by late morning.
  • Parking: Entry fee (about $6-7) is charged per carload, not per person, which covers parking.
  • Swim note: Calm and reef-protected, one of the more beginner-friendly snorkel beaches on the island.

  • Best time: Full-day only, there is no half-day or self-drive option. Book the morning departure most operators run.
  • Parking: Not applicable, this is a boat-only destination.
  • Swim note: Generally calm around the anchor points, but this is open ocean with a genuine multi-hour crossing each way, worth knowing if you're prone to motion sickness.

Yes, by the numbers that matter most. Curacao is rated U.S. State Department Level 1, the lowest, safest tier, the same rating as Aruba, the Cayman Islands, and Bermuda. Normal travel common sense (secure valuables, no visible items in a parked rental car, licensed taxis at night) covers nearly all of the documented risk.
