Curacao Medical Center, the island's main hospital, expects payment or a deposit upfront from non-residents, and visitors are required to carry travel medical insurance with at least $15,000 of coverage. Nobody plans for the reef cut or the ear infection on day two; the policy exists so a bad afternoon stays an anecdote instead of the most expensive part of the trip.

First, the honest check
You might already be partly covered
Some credit cards include trip-cancellation cover when you paid the trip with the card, and some US health plans reimburse emergency care abroad (Medicare itself does not; some Medigap plans add a capped emergency benefit). Five minutes with your card benefits page and your insurer tells you what gap is actually left, so you buy cover once, not twice. What usually is not covered anywhere is medical evacuation.
