Playa Santa Cruz is a free, multiple-use beach that sees mostly local visitors rather than tour groups, with genuinely good facilities for a no-entry-fee spot: beach chairs and umbrellas, showers, restrooms, covered pavilions with picnic tables, and a lifeguard on duty. Free parking is available. The beach itself is a good, calm swimming spot on its own, but its bigger draw is the water taxi service (a well-known local operator, Captain Goodlife) that runs from here to snorkel and dive sites only reachable by boat, including the Mushroom Forest, the Blue Room cave, and Black Sand Beach (Santu Pretu). The premium sites are a paid add-on, not something you can swim to from the beach itself.
Best time
Any time for the beach itself; book the water taxi ahead if you want the Mushroom Forest or Blue Room, it doesn't run on demand.
Swim safety
Calm and lifeguarded, one of the more straightforward family swimming beaches on this list. The premium snorkel sites require the paid water taxi, not a swim from shore.
Parking
Free, on-site.
Shade
Some natural or rentable shade available.
