Playa Piskado, Papiamentu for 'fisherman's beach,' is a small pebbly cove near Westpunt that has become one of the most reliable places in the Caribbean to snorkel alongside sea turtles. Fishermen at the adjacent pier clean their catch and discard scraps, which draws mostly juvenile green sea turtles that have grown accustomed to people. Entry is free, with two free parking lots; a beach chair runs about $3 and an umbrella about $2, or you can lay a towel on the coral rubble that makes up most of the shoreline. The turtles are genuinely wild animals, not a managed attraction, so keep a respectful distance and never touch or feed them yourself.
Best time
Any time the fishermen are cleaning their catch tends to draw more turtles; mornings are generally calmer for snorkeling.
Swim safety
Shoreline is mostly coral rubble, not sand, so water shoes help. Keep distance from the turtles; this is wildlife, not a petting attraction.
Parking
Free, two lots to choose from.
Shade
No real shade, bring an umbrella or rashguard.
